Club Newsletter for October, 2003

Hey Folks:

It's time for an update regarding club news and events. As always, if you would like to be removed from this email group, just let me know by return email. Below are some things that we have going on:

Town Lake Cleanup: Texas Rowing Center is hosting a Town Lake Cleanup on the morning of Saturday, October 11th, beginning at 8:00 AM. We need your help! The event will only take a couple of hours of cleanup, and then we will follow with a potluck lunch on the dock. We need everyone who wants to help to let me know by return email. We promised Parks and Rec at least 50 volunteers by this Wednesday. We enjoy Town Lake and its important for our rowers be good park citizens. Please help!

October Scratch Regatta: The Austin Rowing Club will host the annual Pumpkin Head Regatta on October 25th, which is a 6,000 meter headrace. I hope that many of you will participate. This Saturday, October 4th, we will have a scratch regatta for club members interested in racing. Prizes will be awarded! The course will be 3000 meters starting at Red Bud Island. We hope that this will provide many of you with a springboard for the Pumpkinhead. Sign up with our staff to reserve boats this week, or send me an email equipment request.

Boat Accidents: In the last few weeks, we have had a couple of boat accidents in which boats were severely damaged. Fortunately, nobody has been hurt, although at least one members has rib bruises from getting a rigger in the back. For your own safety, PLEASE REMEMBER TO STAY OVER TO THE SHORE AND AVOID THE MIDDLE OF THE RIVER! The same thing goes for your monetary health. If you wreck a boat, you are responsible for paying for the repair (up to $500). Finally, never pass in front of a quad or eight. Those boats move particularly fast and are extra destructive when they collide with a small boat.

Alum Running for Judge: One of our former members, Stephen Yelenosky, is seeking the Democratic nomination for the 345th District Court, a court of general civil jurisdiction. Stephen is a Harvard Law graduate, an accomplished attorney of nearly twenty years experience, and, for the past 10 years, the legal director of a Advocacy, Inc., a large non-profit law office representing people with disabilities. Stephen has a website up at www.stephenforjudge.com, if you want to find out more. You can also email him at stephen@stephenforjudge.com. Please support Stephen this fall!

Moonlight Row and Potluck Dinner: Last month's moonlight row had record attendance. This month's moonlight row will be on Friday, October 10th, beginning at 7:30 p.m. If you have never participated in a moonlight row, come on down and bring a dish. Our moonlight-guru, Sommers, welcomes you to join him and his merry band of scullers.
Member Incentives: If you have a friend or family member who wants to try rowing, encourage them to join Texas Rowing Center. Remember: if a new member lists you as the person who referred them, you get an extra month of membership!
Coaching Sessions: Ronan is coaching all comers on Saturdays and Sundays from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m., so if you would like to race in the next regatta, or just improve your rowing, come on down. Please take advantage of these coaching opportunities!
IT'S FREE TO MEMBERS!

Quads: Alvin continues to assemble quads - all you have to do is schedule your boat with him. So if you are interested in rowing in a team boat, call Alvin (472-3925) or let me know by return email. We will work you into a boat.

Website: Remember that we now have a website at www.txrowing.com if you want to check out current events and news. Please stop and take a look. If you have suggestions on improvements, let me know.
As always, if you have any questions or suggestions on how we can improve our service to you, please email me or call me at 467-7799. I look forward to seeing you on the water. Matt
